The Westfield, Indiana, community is mourning the passing of Wayne Smith, a longtime real estate professional, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who died on August 13, 2026, at the age of 85.

Born on August 8, 1941, in Cave City, Kentucky, Wayne was the son of the late Paul and Margaret (Gaskin) Smith. He went on to build a remarkable life centered around family, friendship, real estate, travel, golf, music, and service to his community.

Remembering Wayne Smith

Wayne was known as someone who never met a stranger. He had a natural ability to strike up conversations with people wherever he went, creating friendships and connections throughout his life.

He loved traveling, classic cars, golf, and singing. Some of his favorite songs came from legendary performers such as Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley.

Golf was another important part of Wayne’s life. He enjoyed participating in real estate golf tournaments alongside his sons, Daniel and Gregory, and was a former member of Heather Hills Golf Club, now known as Maple Creek.

He also volunteered at the BMW Golf Championship at Crooked Stick as a walking scorer.

A Remarkable Real Estate Career

Wayne’s professional life was defined by an extraordinary commitment to real estate.

He earned his real estate license in the 1970s and maintained it throughout his life. Even after retirement, his passion for the profession continued to draw him back because he genuinely enjoyed the work and the relationships he developed with clients and colleagues.

Wayne began his career at Carriage Estates before establishing his own company, Wayne E. Smith Co. Realtors, during the 1980s.

He later worked with RE/MAX Realtors and F.C. Tucker, where he completed his distinguished career.

Over the course of his career, Wayne sold more than 4,000 homes in Indianapolis and surrounding communities. He received numerous awards for his achievements as one of the area’s leading real estate producers.

He was also a member of the Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors for 56 years and was recognized in Who’s Who in American Real Estate.

His professional accomplishments reflected not only his expertise but also the relationships and trust he built with generations of clients.

65 Years of Marriage

Above all else, Wayne treasured his family.

He married the love of his life, Joyce (McCain) Smith, on August 19, 1961. Together, they shared approximately 65 years of marriage, building a family and a lifetime of memories.

Wayne was immensely proud of his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He frequently spoke about his family and never missed an opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments.

His loved ones will remember his pride in the life they created together and the values of love, laughter, dedication, and hard work that defined their family.

Wayne is survived by his loving wife, Joyce J. Smith, and his children, Daniel (Terri) Smith, Douglas Smith, and Gregory Smith.

He is also survived by his grandchildren Tyler (Kayla) Smith, Hannah Smith, Andrea (Robby) Chadwick, Madysen (Collin) Kuhstoss, Austyn Smith, Clayton Smith, Brandon Smith, and Lauren (Tate) Kelso.

His great-grandchildren include Charlie McCurry, Finn McCurry, Lydia Chadwick, Hudson Kuhstoss, and Shepherd Smith, as well as step-great-granddaughter Audrey Chadwick.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brothers Edgar Smith, Rondell Smith, and Jerry Smith, and his sister Dorothy Combs.

Wayne Smith Funeral and Visitation

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at Flanner Buchanan – Hamilton Memorial Park (Prairie Waters), 4180 Westfield Road, Westfield, Indiana 46062.

Additional visitation will begin at 10:15 a.m. on Friday, August 21, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 17102 Spring Mill Road, Westfield, Indiana 46074.

Entombment will take place at Hamilton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Wayne and Joyce were also members of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church in Westfield.

A Lasting Legacy

Wayne Smith leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond his accomplishments in real estate.

For more than five decades, he built relationships throughout the Indianapolis-area real estate community while remaining deeply devoted to his family.

His love of golf, music, travel, classic cars, and conversation brought joy to his life, but his greatest source of pride was always the family he and Joyce built together.
